| Under the headship of Dr. G.M. Kanvinde and the deanship of Dr. Ushaben Vyas the Physiology department has seen a lot of development in the last few years.
The Undergraduate laboratories have been organized in a better way with Human physiology laboratory divided into hematology and clinical laboratories. A separate Postgraduate Research laboratory has been set up with new equipments like physiograph, ergograph and plethysmograph adding to the already existing valuable instruments present in the department for PG and research studies.
A journal of Applied Basic Medical Science is released every year with the efforts of Dr. J.V Bhatt, Associate Professor in Physiology.
The department was recently inspected by MCI for ME) physiology course and the approval is awaited.
Our future plans include starting a pain clinic. Laboratory for PFT, EMG and NCV studies, Autonomic function tests and Yoga and Meditation. |

| BIOCHEMISTRY |

| The department of Biochemistry is the youngest department of this institute. Up to 1999. It was a part of the Physiology department, although the teaching was done by the biochemistry department. The independent department came into existence in 1999 headed by Dr. N. Haridas. It is presently headed by Dr. (Mrs.) Shobha Choksi.
The department has successfully conducted state level conference on "Updating Biochemistry" and a CME programme on "Infertility and Genetics" in the years 2002-03. Besides UG courses the department offers Ph.D. and plans to offer PG courses in Medical Biochemistry in near future. The Head of Department is actively involved in all activities of Medical Education & Research Unit (MERU) of our institute. State Government and ICMR supported research project on "Screening Inborn Metabolic Disorders" is being carried out in this department. |

| ANATOMY |

The Department of Anatomy is among one of the oldest departments of the college.
It is a matter of great pride for our prime medical education and research institute that our Professor Dr. Bharat D. Trivedi. the head of the Anatomy Department and Gujarat University PhD guide, as an executive member of the Anatomical Society of India, the national body for Anatomy, has been successful in getting our institute the honour to be the host of the 51" NATCON ASI 2003. Gujarat got the privilege to host such a prestigious event after 23 years. During this 511t NATCON ASI he was elected as the national vice president for 2004 and subsequently at 53rd NATCON ASI 2005 at Nagpur, he was elected as National President of ASI for 2005. Incidentally, he has been the First National President of ASI from Gujarat that adds a feather to our institute's crown.
He has also convened Alumni Association of our institute to bring all our past students spread all over the world. |

| MICROBIOLOGY |

| The Microbiology department was separated from Pathology department 15 years ago. Post graduation courses were started in 1995 and the department has never looked back since then.
Presently the department runs various sections under it like Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology and Immunology wherein facilities for processes like aerobic bacterial cultures, specimen examination and demonstration of various forms of fungus and parasites in human samples like hair skin, stool, fluid etc. are available. Anaerobic bacterial cultures will be started in the near future. Immunology techniques like detection of antibodies against HIV, HCV, HBsAg, toxoplasma and DENGUE VIRUS require a special mention.
The department also runs the Voluntary Counseling & Testing Centre (VCTC) for counseling HIV patients and acts as an External Quality Assurance Centre (EQAC) for HIV testing of blood samples from various blood banks e.g... Bhavnagar, Surendranagar etc. It also arranges regular HIV surveillance programme in antenatal group every year in the months of August-September.
Besides the department also handles projects like the detection of VV cholerae in diarrhoea and neonatal septicemia. In addition it is involved in certain training programmes for Ph.D. scholars, MLT training, M Sc. student etc. |

| The Dept. is actively involved in institutional Ethics Committee & MERU. Research is being carried out on the use of placebos in clinical practice, drug use pattern in elderly, post marketing surveillance on hypolipidemic agents, anti-hypertensives, banned & restricted use drugs : what do practitioners know.
There is a bright scope for those who wish to take up Pharmacology as a Post graduation subject. They can then pursue their career in -
