1. Introduction:
Established in 1990 as Education Technology Group, constituted by 32 teachers trained in education technology by NTTC, PGI, Chandigarh. The group has undertaken various activities like conducting workshops for teachers in Education Technology, defining institutional as well as departmental Objectives as well as other activities like Orientation programmes etc. In 1998 it was renamed as Medical Education Unit (MEU) to continue its activities.

2.3 WORKSHOPS/MEETINGS Attended By MEU Members:
· All members are trained in Education Technology by NTTC, Chandigarh.
· Dr. (Mrs.) S. S. Desai, Prof. & Head of Medicine attended Medical Educators’ Meeting at Bangalore held in June, 1992, organized by CHC, Bangalore.
· Dr. (Mrs.) S. S. Desai & Dr. (Mrs.) V.J. Patel attended a Workshop on “Medical Education- Assessment Strategies” held at AIIMS New Delhi from 7-9 October, 1992
· Dr. (Mrs.) S. S. Desai, Prof. & Head of Medicine was awarded scholarship and attended a workshop on Education Technology at Dept. of Medical Education of University of Illinois at Chicago, USA by Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates from January 1994 to April 1994.
· Dr. (Mrs.) S. S. Desai attended workshop for Leaders in Medical Education organized by Sri Ramchandra Medical College, Chennai, Harvard Medical International & Medical Council of India at Chennai from 25/1/05 to 28/1/05.
3. Activities of Medical Education Unit- [1990 Onwards]
3.1 Conducting Workshops on “Education Technology” And Training the Teachers:
· Workshops for Medical teachers :
Ten workshops were held during 1990-91, covering about 160 teachers. Two workshops were conducted in the year 2000 covering 41 teachers. One workshop was held in the year 2001-2002 covering 23 participants (out of which 20 were from our institute while 3 were from other institutes.) Fourteenth workshop was held in October 2002 with 30 participants of whom four were from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad. In 2003, fifteenth workshop was organized from 16th to 19th September with total 30 participants of whom 8 were from other medical colleges of the state. During 2004-2005, two workshops were conducted. Sixteenth workshop was held with 27 participants mainly from M.P.Shah Medical College, Jamnagar, Gujarat. Seventeenth workshop was held from 15-17 February, 2005 with 29 participants from this institute as well as from M.P.Shah Medical College, Jamnagar. XVIII Workshop was organized from 21-23 March, 2006 with 25 participants.
XIX workshop was conducted at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, M.P., from 23 to 25 August, 2007 (35 participants).
The 20th work shop was held in 17-19 February, 2010 in which 36 faculty were trained.
· Workshops for nursing faculty-
2006: We conducted two Education Technology workshopsfor Faculty of Nursing College and Nursing Schools of Gujarat State on request from the Health Commissioner, Gujarat State. Total 50 participants were trained. (March & May 2006).
2008: A workshop for AMC run Nursing Instituteswas held from 22-24 July with 27 participants
2009: Regional Training Centre for Faculty development
The institute has been designated by Medical Council of India as one of the 7 Regional Training Centres for Faculty Development in India. The centre has 30 medical colleges from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Orissa, Sikkim and Manipur under it. The centre has conducted 7 Basic Course Workshops in Education Technology of 3 days duration since July 2009.
3.2 ORIENTATION PROGRAMMES:
Newly admitted First M.B.B.S.; Phase-I students do not have any idea about the Medical Education and the need for Orientation Programme for First M.B.B.S. students was felt by the MEU faculty and they have been conducted every year. Similarly, students entering Phase-II & III; Second M.B.B.S. after passing Phase-I also need orientation due to the complexities of learning programme and simultaneously attending clinics as well as paraclinical subjects. To make them aware about the teaching-learning activities and evaluation in Phase-II & III, the orientation programme for the new Second M.B.B.S. students has been started since 1993 and is conducted regularly.
3.3 PROBLEM SOLVING FOR BETTER HEALTH: First Workshop on “Problem Solving For Better Health” (PSBH) was held on 7-8, August 2001 for Second M.B.B.S. students in collaboration with Health Action by People (HAP), Trivandrum and Dept. of Preventive & Social Medicine. The objective of the workshop was mainly to orient students in research methodology and to encourage them for carrying out small community based research projects. 68 students out of a class of 94 students participated in the workshop. Thereafter, every year this programme is regularly conducted. Last PSBH workshop was conducted on: 17-18 March, 2009.
· WORKSHOPS ON “HEALTHCARE OF THE ELDERLY PEOPLE” FOR PRIMARY & SECONDARY HEALTHCARE PHYSICIANS:Under the auspices of WHO and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India, first workshop was held on 3-4, October 2001, with 35 participants. Second Workshop was held on 27th –28th Feb, 2003. There were 69 participants from ESIS, AMC & private practice sectors.
· WORKSHOP ON INCIDENT COMMAND SYSTEM for INTERNS was held jointly with DMI, Abad-11 July 2003. 20 interns participated.
· WORKSHOP ON RATIONAL DRUG THERAPY FOR RESIDENT DOCTORS supported by SEWA was held on 20th February, 2004, wherein 25 doctors participated actively. Second workshop was held on 19th May, 2004 at SCL Hospital, wherein 24 participants were present.
· WORKSHOP ON CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF MALARIA FOR TEACHERS of medicine, pediatrics and Ob & Gynae departments supported by Commissionerate health – (Malaria, Filaria) Gujarat state, from 17th to 19th March, 2004, 25 teachers participated.
· CME Programme on Clinical Trials- On 7th October, 2005 for the clinical teachers and pharmacology teachers. 35 participants attended.
· Debate & Panel Discussion: Academic Debate and Discussion was held as a part of Platinum Jubilee Year of MCI.
TOPIC: "Should the spirit of scientific enquiry (Research) be an integral part of medical curriculum both at undergraduate and postgraduate level?”

Three teachers have attended NTTC Education Technology Workshop in 2001 one has attended in March 2001 and two have attended in August 2001.One more teacher has attended in March 2002.
From time to time MEU tries to solve learning problems of students by:
· Preparing information brochures and record books for Phase-I, II & III students; etc.
· Holding Meetings with parents of newly admitted First M.B.B.S. students and making them aware of the learning problems as well as psychological problems and how to tackle them;
· By running English Language classes for newly admitted students whose medium of instruction during school had been Gujarati;

3.5 SENDING TEACHERS TO ATTEND THE NTTC WORKSHOPS AT CHANDIGARH:
· Research Methodology Workshops for PG students- In collaboration with Community Medicine Department, Fifth workshop was held from 23/04/07 to 28/04/07.
3.4 OTHER WORKSHOPS
Total 23 workshops (20 for Medical teachers, 3 for Nursing teachers) have been held covering about 436 teachers for training in Education Technology.
